Indigenous youth, led by Duke Redbird, argue their ideas against the blunt pragmatism of American activist and writer Saul Alinksy. Author of the book “Rules for Radicals”, Alinsky is widely considered the father of community organizing who spent his life advocating for improved living conditions in poor communities across the United States. In this impassioned debate, the young activists question the corrupting influence of power, and ask why Indigenous people cannot live traditionally and peacefully on the land. Alinsky responds, “You have got to be part of the world in order to change it. You are not going to make any changes by staying in your corner.” In Alinsky’s view, equality only happens when the disenfranchised have the strength to show the ruling powers that it will be more costly for them to withhold it. Sandeep Rai (Raj Babbar) is a wealthy, yet kind-hearted young man. During his childhood he was separated from brother, Sonu (Aasif). Sonu has now grown up and calls himself Vicki. Vicki loves Hema (Kimi Katkar), who is the daughter of a poor bus driver, John D'Souza (Pran). John lives with his wife, Mary D'Souza (Shammi), four unmarried daughters including Hema, and a son. The D'Souza family meet Sonu and approve of him. One day Sandeep rescues Sonu and Hema from a gang, and he eventually falls in love with Hema. Using his wealth, he buys off the D'Souza family, one by one, and then proposes marriage to Hema. Since the D'Souza family is unable to pay for marriage expenses, Sandeep agrees to pay for all the 4 sisters. He even offers a job to John's son in the USA. Thus indebted to Sandeep, the entire family now wants Hema to marry Sandeep instead of Sonu.

Glyndebourne's Saul stole the summer and had critics raving. The Guardian (****) applauded virtuoso stagecraft from director Barrie Kosky in his debut production there, calling the show a theatrical and musical feast of energetic choruses, surreal choreography and gorgeous singing. For The Independent, which ranked it amongst five top classical and opera performances of 2015, there was no praise too high for the cast. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Ivor Bolton sparkles from the pit with period panache, and designer Katrin Lea Tag's exuberant costumes (The Times ****) set the Old Testament story in Handel's time, with a witty twinge of the contemporary.
